Flood risk in Barnstaple: the Taw, the Yeo and the tide

Flooding in Barnstaple is driven by the estuary. The town is built on the floodplain where the River Yeo joins the tidal River Taw, so the dominant risks are tidal flooding from the Taw and river flooding from the Yeo, with surface water and groundwater adding to the picture on the valley floor. Most Barnstaple sites face more than one source at once, which is why a single map is never enough.

The Taw drains Dartmoor and mid-Devon and reaches Barnstaple as a wide tidal river; it is tidal for around 18 km up to New Bridge, well above the town. The Yeo runs in from the north through Pilton and meets the Taw at Barnstaple, with Bradiford Water alongside it. Knowing which watercourse drives the risk on a given site, and how the tide and the river combine, is the heart of a credible flood risk assessment.

A history of flooding in Barnstaple

These dated events and figures are why authorities scrutinise development in Barnstaple so closely, and why a flood risk assessment in Barnstaple has to be evidence-led rather than generic.
