How to read the colour-coded river levels
Each marker is coloured by where the latest reading sits within that station’s own typical range, not against some national scale. A station shows blue when the level is below its typical low, green when it is within the normal range, orange when it is above the typical high, and red when it is at or near the highest level ever recorded there. Grey means no recent reading has come through.
That “against its own range” point matters. A reading of two metres is alarming on a shallow lowland brook and unremarkable on a large river. Banding every gauge against its own history is what makes a quick scan meaningful. Green means “normal for here”, not “two metres”.
Click any station to see the actual figure, the typical low and high, the highest level on record, and a short trace of the last several readings so you can tell whether the river is rising or falling.
How Environment Agency river gauges work
The map draws on the Environment Agency’s real-time flood-monitoring network, which measures water level (river stage) at gauging stations across England. According to the Environment Agency, levels are usually recorded every 15 minutes, but the data is sent back to its servers at varying frequencies depending on the site and the level of flood risk: typically once or twice a day in calm conditions, and far more often when rivers are rising.
Two practical consequences follow. First, a reading can be a few hours old even when nothing looks wrong, so always check the timestamp shown in the station’s pop-up. Second, the data improves exactly when you need it most: as flood risk climbs, stations report more frequently. River level is measured in metres relative to a fixed local datum, so the number is only meaningful next to that station’s own typical range, which is why the bands, not the raw figure, do the work here.
What “typical range” tells you, and what it doesn’t
The typical range is the band a station normally sits within, derived from its record. A river above its typical high is unusual and worth attention; a river near its record level is a serious signal. But “above typical range” is not the same as “flooding”, and “within typical range” is not a guarantee of safety.
A gauge measures the river at one point. It says nothing on its own about surface water pooling in a street, a blocked culvert on an ordinary watercourse, groundwater rising under a building, or how high the water would reach across a particular site. For the live picture of forecast flood risk, the Flood Forecasting Centre, a partnership between the Environment Agency and the Met Office, issues the five-day flood risk outlook, and the official Check for flooding service carries live warnings alongside the levels.
It also helps to know whether the watercourse near you is a “main river”, managed by the Environment Agency, or an ordinary watercourse, which falls to the lead local flood authority or an internal drainage board. Checking river levels in Wales and Scotland
This map covers England, because it uses the Environment Agency feed. River monitoring elsewhere in the UK is run by the equivalent national bodies, and each publishes its own live data:
- Wales — Natural Resources Wales publishes river levels, rainfall and sea data.
- Scotland — the Scottish Environment Protection Agency publishes water level data.
The gov.uk page on checking river conditions and closures brings these national sources together and adds strong-stream warnings and tide predictions for boaters.
A live river level reading is not a flood risk assessment
This is the distinction that matters most, and the one a gauge cannot answer. A live reading tells you the state of a river at a single point at a single moment. It does not tell you whether a particular plot will flood, how deep, how often, or whether a development on it will satisfy planning policy.
Working that out is a flood risk assessment: a site-specific study that looks at every source of flooding — river (fluvial), surface water, groundwater and tidal — sets design flood levels using the right return periods and probabilities, and accounts for climate change. The published flood maps and live gauges are useful context, but they are not a substitute; this is also why the long-term flood risk map can’t be used for a planning application.
