Why Bridport floods

Bridport sits at the meeting point of four flood sources — a combination that makes the town's flood risk unusually complex compared with most West Dorset settlements. The River Brit and its main tributary the River Asker converge near the town centre; both rivers rise quickly in response to rain on the Dorset chalk and limestone uplands, can peak within hours of a heavy downpour, and carry significant Flood Zone 2 and Flood Zone 3 extents through the built area. The River Brit then flows south through West Bay and into the sea, adding a tidal element at lower reaches that must be considered for any development close to the harbour.

Surface water is a separate, significant problem. The town sits in a shallow bowl — the older terraced streets around South Street, East Street and West Street drain slowly, and runoff from surrounding hillsides can overwhelm the surface-water network before any river overtops. Flood defences and the Brit Catchment NFM Project

Bridport has localised flood defences along sections of the River Brit and Asker — primarily earth embankments and some sheet-piled walls at the town centre bridges. The Environment Agency's flood defence data shows these offer a standard of protection broadly equivalent to the 1-in-25-year flood event in most locations, well below the 1-in-100-year plus climate change horizon that planning assessments must address. Planning policy: what Dorset Council and the Environment Agency require

Any development in Bridport that falls within Flood Zone 2 or 3, or that covers a site of 1 hectare or more even in Flood Zone 1, will require a site-specific flood risk assessment before Dorset Council can determine the planning application. The Environment Agency is the statutory consultee for development in Flood Zones 2 and 3. Will I need a sequential test alongside my flood risk assessment in Bridport?
