How to avoid a Summer Festival Flood

There's no Glastonbury this year. Worthy Farm is taking its fallow year, and part of the reason is the ground itself: it needs a season without 200,000 pairs of wellies compacting it. The rest of 2026 is very much on, though. A brand-new festival arrives at Hylands Park in June, Reading and Leeds run over the August bank holiday, and Creamfields is back in Cheshire. Every one of those sites has something in common that never makes the line-up poster: mapped flood risk.

We're flood risk consultants. We spend the working week telling developers where water will go when it rains, so this is our version of a festival survival guide. No packing lists up front (a short one survives at the bottom). Instead, here's how festival flooding actually happens, our flood maps for three of the UK's best-known festival sites, and where not to put your tent.

Why festival sites flood

Festival flooding is rarely a river bursting its banks mid-set. It's almost always surface water flooding, which drainage people call pluvial flooding: rain falling faster than the ground can soak it up, so it runs downhill and collects in the lowest spot available. If that spot is under your tent, you have a problem. It's also now the dominant source of urban flood risk in England, so the festival field is just a concentrated version of a national problem.

Festival fields are unusually good at producing it. By Friday evening, tens of thousands of feet have compacted the topsoil into something close to concrete, and grass that drained happily on Tuesday sheds water like a car park. Summer makes it worse, not better: warm air carries more moisture, and summer storms are convective, meaning they can drop a month of rain on one parish in an hour.

That isn't a theoretical risk this year. The Met Office's three-month outlook leans hot for summer 2026, but with heavy showers and thunderstorms becoming more likely from late June, especially in the south. And it doesn't take a named storm: overnight rain on 1–2 June put Environment Agency flood alerts on low-lying land across the West Midlands. In June. This is the pattern we keep writing about: rainfall in the UK is getting more intense, and flood risk is shifting with it.

Glastonbury: why Worthy Farm gets so muddy

No festival in 2026, but "does Glastonbury flood?" still deserves a straight answer, because the answer explains the fallow year.

Worthy Farm sits in a shallow valley near Pilton in Somerset, on clay, with the Whitelake River running through the middle of the site. Low ground, slow-draining soil, a watercourse and West Country rainfall: that combination gave the festival its famous mud years in 1997, 2005 and 2016, and you can see why on our map. The surface water flow paths converge exactly where a lot of people end up camping.

A fallow year is good drainage practice, whatever else it is. A season without trampling lets the soil structure recover, which means the ground absorbs more and sheds less when the festival returns in 2027. The farm is resting for the same reason your lawn dies where everyone walks.

Reading Festival: a stage on a floodplain

Reading (27–30 August 2026) is the most honest of the three: Little John's Farm sits on the bank of the Thames, just upstream of where the Kennet joins it. It is floodplain, plainly. In a wet winter, parts of the site are underwater, which is fine, because nobody is camping there in January.

By late August the river risk is low, but the surface water risk isn't. Flat riverside ground has nowhere to send a sudden downpour, and our map shows the low corners where water collects. The practical advice writes itself: camp on the higher ground, away from the river edge and out of the dips, and accept the longer walk to the arena as the price of a dry sleeping bag.

We first drew this map when Hylands Park hosted V Festival. V Festival is long gone (2017 was its last year), but the park has outlived it: Creamfields South ran here in 2022 and 2023, and from 26–28 June 2026 it hosts State Fayre, a new festival with Kings of Leon, Neil Young and The Lumineers on the bill.

The flood risk didn't leave with the headliners. The map is a map of the park, not the event, and it still shows water gathering in the same low spots and around the same ponds it always did. If you're heading to State Fayre's first year, you get the benefit of a decade-old map that nobody else in the queue has looked at.

When the weather wins

Sometimes there's nothing a sensible pitch can do. Creamfields cancelled its final day in August 2012 after torrential rain made the site hazardous, with thousands already camped and thousands more on the way. In August 2024, Storm Lilian hit the same festival with gusts around 60mph: delayed gates, closed stages, and people told to wait in their cars until it was safe to come in.

That's not organisers being precious. Every large festival runs on an event safety plan with weather triggers, and when those triggers fire, decisions get made quickly. Your part of the bargain is small but real: when you first arrive, find the exits and muster points on the official site map, so that if an announcement ever comes, you already know where you're going.

How to actually avoid a festival flood

The short version of everything above:

  • Look at the official site map before you arrive, and note the exits and muster points while you're at it. You can also check the flood risk of any festival site yourself on GOV.UK before you buy the ticket.
  • Pitch uphill and upstream. Height is the one thing surface water can't argue with.
  • Stay out of dips, ditches and the bottom of any slope, however sheltered and inviting they look.
  • Avoid camping next to water points. Constantly running taps on trampled ground make a swamp without any help from the weather.
  • Keep off the main walking routes. Compacted paths shed water onto whatever sits beside them, and you don't want a midnight visitor tripping over your guy ropes either.
  • Arrive early. The choice of pitch is the only flood defence you control, and it's gone by Friday lunchtime.

Kit-wise, the 2017 advice still stands: sealable plastic bags for anything you'd cry about losing, a portable charger, cheap wellies and more wet wipes than seems reasonable. Festival flooding FAQ

Worthy Farm is low-lying clay land in a valley with a river through it, in one of the wetter parts of England. Once 200,000 people compact the topsoil, even moderate rain has nowhere to go but sideways, and the mud arrives.

As high as the campsite allows, away from watercourses, ditches, water points and main paths. If you can see water flowing toward your pitch in your head when you imagine heavy rain, keep walking.

Organisers work from an event safety plan: stages can close, arenas can be held shut and, in rare cases like Creamfields 2012, days get cancelled. Refund terms vary by event, so check yours before you travel.

Yes. Creamfields lost its final day to flooding in 2012, and weather has shut stages or delayed gates at many others since, including Storm Lilian's hit on Creamfields in 2024.

Flooding caused by rain that can't soak into the ground or reach a drain fast enough, so it flows over land and pools in low spots. It's the most common type of flood risk in England, and it's exactly what turns a festival field into a bog. We've explained all the sources of flood risk here.

The maps are only getting bluer

One last thing worth knowing. In May 2026 the Environment Agency added climate-adjusted surface water data to its national flood maps, and the latest national assessment puts around 4.6 million properties in England at surface water risk, up 43% on the previous estimate. Mapped risk is rising, at festival sites and everywhere else.
