The River Sherbourne
The River Sherbourne rises near Corley and flows south-east through Coventry before joining the River Sowe at Stivichall. The section from approximately Spon End to Clay Lane — around 1.7 km — runs in culvert beneath the city centre. Because the culvert is classified as an Environment Agency Main River, it falls under EA jurisdiction, and any development within eight metres of the culvert centreline requires EA Flood Risk Activity consent as well as a detailed flood risk assessment. Flood Zone mapping applies to the culverted reach, but the enclosed nature of the channel means that flood zone boundaries must be read alongside the SFRA's own culvert-condition commentary rather than taken at face value from the national digital mapping. The River Sowe and ordinary watercourses
The River Sowe enters Coventry from the north-east near Walsgrave, passes through Stoke and Stivichall, and exits south-west to join the Avon near Stoneleigh.
