Cranleigh Waters is a modest river with an outsized capacity to flood. It drains one of the few heavy-clay catchments that feed the River Wey, and because clay sheds rain rather than soaking it up, the river rises fast and spills onto the low ground at Bramley, Shalford, Wonersh and the edge of Cranleigh after prolonged wet weather. On Christmas Eve 2013 the flow it forced into the Wey helped drive the worst flooding Guildford had seen in a generation. On Christmas Eve 2013, after 57 millimetres of rain fell in 24 hours, Cranleigh Waters reached its highest recorded level at Bramley — 3.99 metres — and the water it pushed into the River Wey helped flood homes and businesses through Guildford.

Why does Cranleigh Waters flood?
Cranleigh Waters floods because of what lies under its catchment. Alone among the Wey’s tributaries, it drains a catchment made up predominantly of heavy Low Weald clay, and clay does not absorb rain — it sheds it. When wet weather sets in, water runs off the fields and lanes into the channel far faster than it would over chalk or sand, so the river fills quickly, peaks sharply and then falls away just as fast. Hydrologists call a river that behaves this way “flashy”, and Cranleigh Waters is a textbook example.
The river rises in the rural country south of Cranleigh, near Walliswood, gathering the Cobbler’s Brook, Thornhurst Brook and Coneyhurst Gill on its way to Vachery Pond before turning north to run for roughly 29 kilometres and form the boundary between Wonersh and Bramley on its way to meet the River Wey at Shalford. Its catchment covers around 111 square kilometres. For much of that lower course the disused Wey and Arun Canal runs alongside it, crossing the river at Gosden Aqueduct — a reminder of how tightly the valley floor is hemmed in.
- A clay catchment that sheds rain. Impermeable Weald clay across the catchment produces rapid runoff and a fast-rising river after prolonged or intense rainfall.
- Small brooks add up quickly. Cobbler’s Brook, Thornhurst Brook, Coneyhurst Gill, the Littlemead Brook through Cranleigh and a web of field ditches all feed the main channel, concentrating runoff into the valley.
- Two gauged reaches. The Environment Agency records levels at Flash Bridge, near Alfold Crossways in the upper valley, and at Bramley near the Wey confluence — the reach where flooding bites hardest.
- It empties into a river already under pressure. Cranleigh Waters joins the Wey just upstream of Guildford, so its peak can arrive when the Wey itself is high.
A history of flooding on Cranleigh Waters
The river’s flood record is short on paper but long in local memory. The September 1968 storm that swamped much of Surrey hit Cranleigh hard, and in its aftermath Surrey County Council built a run-off brook to divert floodwater during heavy rain onto agricultural land behind what is now the Sainsbury’s in the village — an early piece of flood management that still does its job in wet winters.
The benchmark modern event came on Christmas Eve 2013. After 57 millimetres of rain fell in the 24 hours to midnight on 24 December, Cranleigh Waters rose faster than had been seen before and reached 3.99 metres at the Bramley gauge at 2:15pm — still its highest recorded level. That surge fed straight into the River Wey upstream of Guildford, where it combined with an equally rapid rise on the Tillingbourne to flood homes and businesses through the town centre, in roads such as Walnut Tree Close, Mary Road and Leas Road. In Cranleigh itself, residents were evacuated from flooded homes in the early hours of Christmas Eve.
The river has been in flood alert or warning several times since. Two flood alerts covering Cranleigh Waters and the Upper Wey were in force in December 2019, and during Storm Henk in early January 2024 the river ran high for days, with flooding of low-lying land and roads reported around Flash Bridge, Cranleigh, Ewhurst Green and Bramley. Which areas does Cranleigh Waters put at risk?
Flooding from Cranleigh Waters is concentrated on the low ground of the valley floor, and the Environment Agency runs a formal warning service for the communities most exposed. A catchment-wide flood alert area — “Cranleigh Waters including Elmbridge, Shamley Green and Bramley and the Littlemead Brook including Cranleigh” — covers the whole river, and within it two more precise flood warning areas sit at Bramley and at the reach near Cranleigh and Shamley Green, where the Environment Agency can warn individual properties.
