Littlemead Brook is a small watercourse with an outsized hold over Cranleigh. It runs right through the middle of the village, gathering rain off the heavy Weald clay and threading past homes, gardens and the low ground south of the High Street before it joins Cranleigh Waters. Because clay sheds water rather than soaking it up, the brook rises fast and spills quickly, and it has put Cranleigh homes and roads under water more than once — most severely on Christmas Eve 2013. On 24 December 2013, after 56.8 millimetres of rain fell on Cranleigh in a single day, Littlemead Brook reached its highest recorded level at the Cranleigh gauge — 3.38 metres — flooding homes and leaving main roads through the village impassable.
- A flashy, clay-fed brook. Littlemead Brook drains part of Cranleigh’s heavy Low Weald clay, so runoff reaches the channel within hours of heavy rain and levels peak sharply — the Environment Agency describes Cranleigh as a “flashy catchment”.
- A designated Main River. The Environment Agency regulates Littlemead Brook, so the 8 metre byelaw margin and Flood Risk Activity Permits apply to work near it.
- Its own live gauge and flood warning area. The Cranleigh gauge (station 7234) tracks the brook in real time, and the Environment Agency runs a dedicated flood warning area, “Littlemead Brook at Cranleigh”.
- Development pressure across the village. A decade of new housing on the clay has added to the runoff the brook has to carry, and sites in or near its floodplain almost always need a flood risk assessment for planning.

Why does Littlemead Brook flood?
Littlemead Brook floods because of what lies beneath Cranleigh. The village sits on the flat Low Weald, on heavy clay that sheds rain instead of absorbing it. When wet weather sets in, water runs off the fields, roads and rooftops into the brook far faster than it would over chalk or sand, so the channel fills quickly, peaks sharply and then falls away just as fast. Hydrologists call a watercourse that behaves this way “flashy”, and the Environment Agency uses exactly that word for Cranleigh — a catchment that, because of its geology and topography, shows an almost immediate response to intense rainfall.
The brook rises on the eastern side of Cranleigh and runs roughly westward through the built-up heart of the village, past the Knowle Lane and Littlemead area and the low ground south of the High Street, before joining Cranleigh Waters on the western edge of the village. From there the combined flow runs north down the valley to meet the River Wey at Shalford, and on to the Thames at Weybridge. Littlemead Brook is one of four watercourses — with Cobbler’s Brook, Thornhurst Brook and Cranleigh Waters itself — that drain the Cranleigh area and converge into Cranleigh Waters.
- A clay catchment that sheds rain. Heavy Weald clay across Cranleigh produces rapid runoff and a fast-rising brook after prolonged or intense rainfall, with little natural storage to slow it down.
- Groundwater adds to the load. The Environment Agency maps aquifers to the south and west of Cranleigh, so water can seep upward through the clay and keep the ground saturated through the winter, leaving even less room for rain to soak away.
- A brook through a built-up village. Littlemead Brook runs through the middle of Cranleigh, so when it tops its banks the water reaches homes, gardens and roads directly rather than open countryside.
- It feeds a river already under pressure. The brook empties into Cranleigh Waters, which joins the Wey upstream of Guildford, so its peak forms part of a catchment-wide response to heavy rain.
A history of flooding on Littlemead Brook
Flooding in Cranleigh is not new, and the brook is central to the record. The village has flood accounts going back to 1852, with notable events in 1968, 1979, 1981, 2000, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Residents recall the natural flood plain south of the High Street completely inundated in September 1968, when catchment-wide flooding hit much of Surrey. Repeated flooding of the High Street and its businesses in December 1979 and June 1981 led to an engineering assessment, after which Waverley Borough Council built an extensive set of flood relief works in 1981–82 to protect the most vulnerable areas.
In 2000 the brook made the point plainly: Littlemead Brook overflowed directly onto the flood plain during heavy rain. The benchmark modern event, though, came on Christmas Eve 2013. After 56.8 millimetres of rain fell in a single day between 23 and 24 December, the brook reached 3.38 metres at the Cranleigh gauge — still its highest recorded level — flooding homes and leaving the main roads through the village impassable, with residents evacuated in the early hours. Significant flooding returned in January and June 2016. In the wettest spells, surface water quickly overwhelms the local sewer network too, adding sewer flooding to the mix, as recorded in Waverley Borough Council’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment. One reason Littlemead Brook demands care is that its flooding rarely arrives alone. On heavy clay, rain that cannot soak in runs across the surface and ponds on roads and low ground before it ever reaches a watercourse, so surface-water flooding and out-of-bank flow from the brook tend to happen together. In the most intense storms the sewer network fills as well, and Cranleigh has a number of combined sewer overflows that discharge to the brook when the system is overwhelmed.
