Why Bridgnorth floods: the Severn, the Worfe and the Tiddle Brook
Fluvial flooding from the River Severn is the dominant risk in Bridgnorth, and it is concentrated almost entirely in Low Town. The River Worfe and the Tiddle Brook add localised risk at the town's northern and south-western edges, surface water affects the steeper streets on both sides of the cliff after heavy rain, and groundwater held in the sandstone complicates soakaway drainage on higher ground.

A history of flooding in Bridgnorth
These dated events are why Shropshire Council scrutinises Low Town development so closely, and why a flood risk assessment in Bridgnorth has to be evidence-led rather than generic. The record comes from the Environment Agency's own gauge on the Severn at Bridgnorth, which has tracked the river continuously since the 1980s.
- 1998 and 2002. Bridgnorth flooded in both years, part of a run of wet winters that put Low Town under water repeatedly through the 1990s and early 2000s.

- Summer 2007. Renewed flooding across the Severn valley washed away the approach road at Hampton Loade and closed the Severn Valley Railway line out of Bridgnorth station after landslips.
- February 2020. Storms Ciara and Dennis in quick succession pushed the Severn to some of its highest levels since 2000 through the town.
- January 2024 — Storm Henk. The river peaked at 4.9m on 5 January, just 36cm short of the 2000 record, flooding Riverside, Severnside, Severn Park and the rugby club pitch, and closing the A442.

Flood defences and the case for protecting Low Town
Unlike Shrewsbury's Frankwell scheme or Ironbridge's demountable barriers, Bridgnorth currently has no permanent flood defences. More than 100 Low Town properties have been identified as being at high risk, and Shropshire Council, the Environment Agency, Severn Trent Water and Bridgnorth Town Council have discussed a protection scheme since 2020 — but a fully funded scheme has yet to be confirmed.
No permanent scheme yet protects Low Town: more than 100 at-risk properties currently rely on warning time and temporary measures rather than a flood wall.
For a flood risk assessment, the absence of a scheme actually simplifies one part of the picture: there is no defended standard of protection to test residual risk against, so present-day Flood Zone mapping applies without the "what if the defence failed" question that a Frankwell-style wall introduces upstream.
