A mean high water spring tide at Felixstowe Pier already reaches +1.85m OD, with a 3.4-metre tidal range before any storm surge is added — so even routine tides sit close to the margins that matter for low-lying property.
- Tidal and coastal flooding. The Environment Agency maintains three flood warning and alert areas covering the town: the tidal River Orwell estuary from Felixstowe to the Ipswich Tidal Barrier, the Suffolk and Essex coast from Felixstowe to Clacton (covering the Orwell and Stour estuaries), and a dedicated area for Bawdsey Quay and Felixstowe Ferry. These areas exist because a North Sea surge, arriving on top of a high spring tide, can overtop or threaten the sea and estuary defences that protect the town's frontage.
- Surface water. The 1953 Great Tide: Felixstowe's defining flood event
The night of 31 January to 1 February 1953 remains the reference point for flood risk anywhere on this stretch of coast. A North Sea tidal surge, driven by a deep depression and severe northerly gales, coincided with high spring tides to raise sea levels far beyond anything the era's defences were built to withstand. At Felixstowe, the surge breached the River Orwell wall in seven places, sending water across Trimley Marshes and into the low-lying Langer Road area of the town's West End, where floodwater reached over six feet deep at the height of the flood.
Forty-one people died in Felixstowe that night, the great majority of them in a single estate of wooden prefabricated homes at the Langer Road/Orford Road junction. The houses were torn from their foundations by the force of the surge, and residents had to climb onto their roofs to escape the rising water in the middle of the night. Felixstowe and neighbouring Harwich together recorded over 40 deaths that night, one of five major clusters of loss along the English east coast — alongside Mablethorpe and Sutton-on-Sea, Hunstanton and Snettisham, Jaywick, and Canvey Island — within a UK-wide death toll of 307.
A Memorial Wall and garden now stand by Langer Primary School on Langer Road, close to where the estate once stood. A blue line on the memorial marks the depth the floodwater reached that night, and a plaque records the names of those who died. Sixty years later, the 5–6 December 2013 North Sea tidal surge — described as the most serious east-coast surge event in six decades, with sea levels more than two metres above the predicted tide at some points and around £1 billion of damage across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex — again affected the Orwell and Stour estuary, underlining that Felixstowe's tidal exposure has not gone away with time.
