A history of flooding in Maldon

Maldon and its estuary villages have a long, well-documented history of tidal flooding. The North Sea flood of 1953 breached defences along the Blackwater and put seawater into Heybridge; the storm surge of 5 December 2013 pushed water levels at Maldon higher than at more seaward Tollesbury; and Northey Island, in the estuary opposite the town, hosted England's first managed coastal realignment scheme in 1991 as a direct response to that recurring risk.

  • 1953 — the North Sea flood. A sluice at Old Fort, Decoy Point failed and let the tide flood Heybridge; Heybridge mill was later demolished, and the river was dammed between Heybridge Hall and Potman Marsh in 1954 as a flood defence improvement. Essex recorded 104 of England's 307 deaths in the disaster — roughly a third of the English total, making it the country's worst-hit county.
  • 1991 — Northey Island managed realignment. The National Trust deliberately breached the sea wall at the south-east corner of Northey Island, creating around a hectare of new saltmarsh — the first scheme of its kind in England. It has since been repeated on the island, with further realignments from 2019 creating around 5 more hectares of saltmarsh.
  • 2013 — the 5 December storm surge. The surge (Cyclone Xaver) produced some of the highest still-water levels ever recorded on the east coast, higher than 1953 on stretches south of the Humber. Water levels recorded at Maldon were higher than at more seaward Tollesbury on the Blackwater, and parts of the town were among the worst-affected in Essex; 36 severe flood warnings were issued across the region that night.
